Ecosystem Sports & Winter Technologies

Winter sports and winter sport technologies have had a long tradition in South Tyrol and are highly rated. Around a quarter of South Tyrol’s GDP is derived from from winter tourism and winter sports technology. Entrepreneurs from South Tyrol rank with the market leaders in this branch, their products, solutions and systems set the benchmark for technological standards and are thus welcomed by markets all over the world. In addition to the global players, South Tyrol also has a number of small and medium-sized firms which have found their niche in the marketplace thanks to their ability to innovate and the high quality of their products.

The Alpine Technologies – Sports & Winter Technologies – ecosystem links together the competencies of the South Tyrol outdoor sports and winter sports sectors and aims to develop these further. This will be achieved via networking firms, research institutes and educational institutions in the individual economic and technological areas of competence within the various branches.

The Sports & Winter Technologies area is pursuing these aims:

  • Market leadership:

vigorously promoting internationalisation in the winter sports technology branch and developing innovation leadership in growth markets such as China, South Korea and Russia.

  • Thematic leadership:

 improving the image of winter sports and setting the agenda for “Winter sports in the future”. Developing outdoor themes and accelerating the process of transition from skiing region to mountain destination in order to turn it into an all-year-round tourist destination.

  • Innovation leadership:

 supporting the actors in the ecosystem with their innovation and cooperation projects.

The Ecosystems of IDM Südtirol / Alto Adige were assessed on December 14th, 2016 according to the Silver Label approach developed and performed by the "European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis“. The Ecosystems fulfill selected indicators of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative and develops its processes and tools continuously. The Ecosystems receives the Silver Label of Cluster Management Excellence valid until December 31st, 2018.
