For a tastier future.

IDM develop multi-year strategic plans for the development of the food sector.

The food sector plays a particularly important role in the economy of South Tyrol, where the 16,500 farms of the region produce immense quantities of foodstuffs every year, particularly apples, milk, wine, and speck. Our province is also the largest apple cultivation area of Europe and generates 10% of all continental apple production. The share of food products earmarked for export is 19%, of which agricultural products make up 14%.

The role of IDM

In order to remain competitive, further consolidation of South Tyrol’s food sector is essential. IDM, consequently, in conjunction with institutional and economic organisations, develops strategic plans aimed towards developing the sector and promoting key projects throughout the entire value chain. This approach leads to profitable synergies between local and extra-regional players in the fields of research, training, and the economy in general. Because it is only by coming together that we can guarantee the growth and progress of South Tyrol into the future.

To this end, we study future trends, monitor market trends, and identify platforms and strategic multi-year strategic plans to provide the food sector with innovative support.

Working with a view to tomorrow

For companies working in the food sector, taking a sustainable approach towards producing, packaging and transporting goods sustainability is becoming ever more important. In addition, regionality, health and digitalisation all provide significant development opportunities for the entire food sector in South Tyrol.

The aim is to increase both innovation levels and added value; in order to achieve this, a project plan covering sustainability, regionality and healthy diet has been established, and will be implemented over the next three years. Project priorities include the creation of local supply chains (food production) for the agricultural products of South Tyrol which have a low self-supply rate, e.g., cereals, eggs, small fruits, nuts and vegetables. The project aim is to increase the visibility and appreciation of local products through advertising campaigns.
